The DoodleBops - The Doodlebops 2007 USA Concert Review
Doodlebops Concert Review
Date: February 25, 2007 at 4pm.
Venue: Broomfield Event Center, Broomfield Colorado
Who Attended: 2 adults, one child aged 4 ½
The concert began with a Playhouse Disney Pre-show, hosted by Bus Driver Bob. James Baker is not the same actor who appears in the television show, yet he did a good job portraying Bus Driver Bob throughout the concert. During the pre-show there were clips from Playhouse Disney shows such as the Little Einstein's, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Higglytown Heroes and Handy Manny. There was also an exercise segment with JoJo from JoJo's Circus. This was a great way for the Doodlebops to show how much they appreciate their affiliation with Disney, specifically Playhouse Disney.
After the pre-show there was a delay of approximately 5 minutes before the concert began. As expected, the Doodlebops opened with We're the Doodlebops, which incited the crowd of preschoolers and adults into loud approval.
Staying true to the television show next was the Where's Moe segment, followed by the Pledge. During the Doodlebop Pledge the audience was invited to say the words along with the Doodlebops, and after showing our hands we all became honorary Doodlebops. They also did the Doodlebop Pledge again after the intermission. For this version they used large flags and did a whole dance routine with the flags. It was very well done, and quite enjoyable.
During the show the Doodlebops sang hits from both Season 1 and Season 2, and even introduced a new song that will appear in the Season 3 episodes. The song, Let's Rock promises to be a big hit for the Doodlebops.
Other songs performed during the show were:
Queen DeeDee
Bird is the Word (the Bird Song)
Tick Tock
Mystery Riff
Together Forever
Let's Get Loud
Faces (Sad, Glad, Bumpy, Grumpy)
Very Scary
Wobbly Whoopsy
Hold your Horses
Doodleboppin (performed by the dancers)
Get on the Bus.
The Doodlebops were joined by four dancers for various songs during the show. The dancers, Jacqueline Covas, Michael Dalke, Anthony Napoletano and Amanda Simpson did a great job not only performing on stage, but also coming into the floor seats to talk to children. These dancers also hand picked children to join DeeDee on stage while she sang Very Scary.
Surprisingly, the Doodlebops ended the show with a second singing of Get on the Bus instead of the song they use to close out each episode of the Doodlebops television show.
Moe, Rooney and DeeDee put on an incredible show with singing, dancing and skits. They were joined by the Doodlebop Dancers, Bus Driver Bob, and even Audio Murphy. The concert was very active and entertaining. Lisa Lennox, Chad McNamara and Jonathan Wexler are three very talented young people that bring instant smiles to both children and adults. The break-dancing talents of Jonathan Wexler were quite impressive to see live. And you may be wondering if Moe pulled the rope. Yes. He did.
The portion of the show with Audio Murphy was short, but he was there to introduce sounds for the Doodlebops and the dancers. Audio Murphy would play a type of music and the dancers would make up a dance. While the segment was short, it was effective in showing the new character for season 2.
In addition to the pre-show, Bus Driver Bob did have his own song during the Mystery Riff segment. This portion of the show enabled him to show his guitar playing talents, which were quite impressive.
There were several different sets used during the concert. After the Doodlebops came out to sing We're the Doodlebops, the set was quickly transformed to their club house. The familiar red couch was then removed, leaving just a portion of the couch for the Queen DeeDee segment. The Get on the Bus segment was done twice, with a bus constructed for the Doodlebops to get into, yet for the dancing during the song, they stepped out and the bus was the background. There were a few portions of the show where the Doodlebops instruments were on stage. DeeDee had her piano, Moe had his drums, and Rooney had his guitar. While the instruments were on the stage, the Doodlebops quickly moved to the front of the stage so that they could dance while singing.
Also for those in the front row, be prepared as the Doodlebops do come down off the stage during the concert. Each character came down at least one time. At one point Moe came down and gave us high 5's and say hi to a few children before going back on stage. Rooney also came down to say hi to the friend sitting next to me. DeeDee came down on each side of the stage, but never left the stairs. During the last 'official' song Flat-sitis, the Doodlebops sat on the edge of the stage and children from all over the floor came rushing up. Many children had parents with them, and one of them was quite rude and just stood in front of us, blocking our view. Be prepared for this whether you are in the front row or not, because if you are on the floor, they do encourage your child to come up front for this song. Please be respectful of those sitting down though, and don't stand up blocking the view.
Many regular characters were not evident at the concert. Jazzmin, who normally introduces the Doodlebops, was not in attendance. In fact the person who did introduce them when they came out initially and again after intermission was a male voice. Mudge was not there, and the show had no knock-knock segment. Finally, John Catucci, the much loved Bus Driver Bob is not touring with the band.
The concert was split into two parts with a 15 minute intermission. During the intermission the Doodlebops changed into their concert outfits for the last half of the show. Including the intermission, the concert was approximately 1 ½ hours.
There was a plethora of merchandise available at the show. Doodlebops coloring books were available for purchase at the cost of $5.00 each. There were also two different light toys. One of these toys spins around and the other has a ball on top that does not spin. We did not purchase either toy, so I am not sure of the cost.
Most food items were either served in Doodlebop keepsakes, or came with them, so the cost was higher. For example cotton candy came with a hat, and could not be purchased without the hat. The cost was approximately $15.00 for cotton candy. Lemonade and snow cones were approximately $5.00 each.
As with most concerts, there was also a program. The large program is full color with Rooney, Moe and DeeDee on the front cover, each holding an instrument. Inside the front cover is the Doodlebops Pledge and the Doodlebops are holding the flags used during the pledge on the opposite page. Each character has a two page layout with pictures and information about the character. In addition, Rooney's layout has some questions, and Moe's has a maze to solve. There is also a find the musical note game with Audio Murphy, a matching game with Bus Driver Bob, another search and find game and connect the dots on DeeDee's keytar. The back cover of the program has a full color picture of Moe getting ready to pull the rope. The center pages of this program are set up for easy removal and can be hung as a poster. The cost of this program is $12.00.
Our family is not the typical Doodlebops fan family. Our son doesn't watch the Doodlebops every day. Since I write for the website, I do watch the shows, but my husband rarely sees them, and frankly could take them or leave them. From the minute the curtain opened and the Doodlebops came out, I found my self fully entertained. The minute they came on stage my son's face lit up with joy at seeing the Doodlebops live. Even my husband was bopping to the music and had a smile on his face. Our family really enjoyed this concert and will happily go to another Doodlebops concert when they come back to Colorado.
We did have front row tickets, and had just one problem. Our son has very sensitive ears, and the speakers were right in front of us. We had put earplugs in his ears, but at certain points of the show, such as the Let's Get Loud segment, they were not good enough and he had some problems. Next time, we will get better earplugs for him. The portions of the show that excited him the most were the opening segment up through the Pledge, the Get on the Bus portions, and when Rooney sang Bird is the Word he was thrilled.
Thank You Chad, Jonathan and Lisa for both a great show and for taking the time to spend a few minutes with us.
